La fractura de cadera en los ancianos es una patologia de elevada incidencia y prevalencia que genera unos costes personales, sociales y economicos muy importantes. La incidencia de la osteoporosis en Espana es muy elevada, y debido al progresivo envejecimiento de la poblacion actual y en los proximos anos, se espera que aumente el numero de las llamadas fracturas por fragilidad, entre las que destacan por su importancia las fracturas de extremo proximal de femur. Aunque se trata de un tema ampliamente estudiado y objeto de debate continuo, existen menos trabajos en nuestro medio que analicen la evolucion de esta patologia en una poblacion determinada a lo largo del tiempo. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido describir la evolucion de la incidencia, factores de riesgo, los tipos de fractura, el tratamiento, las repercusiones funcionales y la mortalidad en la poblacion atendida por nuestro centro hospitalario a lo largo de ocho anos con la finalidad de comprobar nuestros resultados en su tratamiento, y conocer todos aquellos factores sobre los que podemos actuar y modificar, para tratar de instaurar medidas mas eficientes para el tratamiento de esta patologia.
